At home among the gum trees...
Gum trees are so interesting! They don't drop their leaves but they do lose their bark. They are lovely and smooth.
Curiously, they can be entirely hollow but remain alive! Such is the case with this one. I climbed inside because it was possible to do so. I did a thorough spider-check before venturing in, of course!
Huge and Patrick are the "cute" birds in this gum tree. They are very co-operative subjects!
Golf in the Riverland?
On the river...
The River Murray is dear to Australians and indeed, most important to them. This artery of water is essential for life in this drought-ridden country. An important source of water for cities and farms, it's also a beauty for the eye!
We are told that a houseboat trip on the river is a very popular holiday option.
Huge and I joined a group of other exchange teachers and their families to experience this part of South Australian culture. There were about twenty of us. Two boats and a long weekend make for a fine, relaxing mini-break.
We had excellent weather, great meals, and striking scenery.
Huge enjoyed the opportunity to pilot the craft and to practise his knots!
The crew of the Black Swan...
It's an interesting thing....navigating an enormous barge of a houseboat up and down the river! Everyone had a turn at the helm. Many moments of hilarity!
Curious, Huge and I think, that we always end up in the loud, rowdy group! We loved our Black Swan crew. They knew how to laugh! We didn't see many sunrises...the company late into the night was too tempting!
Here we all are on the last day in our impromptu uniform!
Birds on the River Murray...
The caws of gigantic crows and the belly-laughs of kookaburras were heard all weekend. However, they escaped the lens this time! The pelicans and black swans were a little more co-operative.
Also, I was fortunate enough to snap this lucky shot of a spoonbill. It's so funny...gripping the branch with one claw.

Barossa Valley Revisited...
It has been raining in South Australia....raining almost every day! The sun came out on Sunday though, so we headed out on another road trip. Our first visit to this lovely wine-growing area at Easter was dry and dusty. This weekend we discovered what a difference some rain can make.
We joined our Colorado mates, Kim and Patrick, and ferreted out some new wineries. Whistler and Vinecrest...both had a lovely cabernet sauvignon.
The drive was good...sort of a trial run for our trip to Alice Springs in July. It worked out famously. Our musical tastes mesh, Patrick loves to pull over to take photos, and they love to laugh. Good value! (Oh...and they'll pose for silly photos. What more can we ask!?!?!?!?)
These are my sunset shots with grape vines (stripped and harvested now) in shadow.....
